VisitorVille Catches Users that have Fake IP Addresses

Last month GSG did a short summary of counter services that graphic site owners can use to keep track of the visitors coming to your site. One of the counters that GSG took a look at is called VisitorVille. VisitorVille has been around for a few years now and the software is always being upgraded with new counter options. One of the options that makes VisitorVille a great counter tool is that you can actually rename the IP addresses in order to give it more of a personal touch. Well as cool as it seems to give IP addresses names such as Kim or Tom, or any name you choose. It turns out that naming the IP addresses with personal names will also allow you to actually trace a fake IP address.

I'm sure this is a bonus feature that wasn't planed in the software's design as it doesn't work 100%. But from time to time giving the IP address a personal name will allow you to track the IP even if the visitor is using software that allows them the visitor to use a fake IP address. I have seen this first hand as I was curious to see how often I cool trick the VisitorVille counter software. To my surprise I was able to trick VisitorVille half of the time. The other way that VisitorVille tracks the real IP address is by telling the user if a visitor is a repeat visitor. If the visitor is a repeat visitor then you can search the access times that the IP had to your site. This will allow you to see the numerous IP addresses that a specific user is using. Hopefully VisitorVille continue in this direction it would be a great thing for websites owners and it will make it easier to track those who just want to cause trouble on the site.
