Creating Skin Tones (8/13/06)

Creating skins tones for images is fairly easy to do and it doesn't require much time. The main thing you want to focus on when picking the skin tones for your images is that it is a good color for blending. This tutorial will show you how to determine which colors will work best as a skin tone for your artwork. You will be using the Basic Shading Technique#1 to help pick the skin tone.

Step 1

Create 2 Layers. The bottom layer will have the outline of the cirlce. The top layer will be used for the color. Fill the top layer with the color that you want to use.

Step 2

Select the top layer and use the burn tool to shade half of the circle. If the color blends to your liking then use the eye drop to get the orginal color (the left side of the circle) and the burn color (the right side of the circle). You now have 2 good skin tones ready for use.

First Steps Coloring Preparation

Before you start coloring your image take a look at the steps below that will make your coloring experience more enjoyable.

Tip 1: Use a good outline. The outline should contain little or no flaws for color fills. If the outline has choppy lines then it will require more time to color. Check the outline tutorials to see how to create clean and smooth outline tutorials.

Tip 2: Before you color make sure your image is large enough to allow you to color the your image with quality. You can always reduce the size of the picture after the larger image has been colored. Reducing the picture will allow you to keep the quality of coloring from the larger image.

Tip 3: Color using layers in order. This will allow you to protect your outline and will give you a large range of flexibility when working with the colors. For example, different layers will allow you to change colors without affecting the entire picture. A separate color layer for a shirt will allow you to change the colors of that shirt without changing the colors of the pants. Coloring in layers allows for easier correction of mistakes.

Remember these 3 tips when you are preparing to color and you shouldn't have any problems coloring your image.

Coloring Using the Flood Fill and Burn Tool

This is a coloring technique that is excellent for coloring anime drawings, but it also works well with other types of artwork. Even tough this the tutorials is in video format there are a few things you need to do before beginning. Lets begin.

Things you need to know before you start
1. How to make Layers
2. How to use the Select tool
3. How to use the Flood Fill (paint bucket tool)
4. How to use the Burn tool

Step 1: Create a new layer on top of your outline. Name the new layer "Color". You can create as many color layers as needed. For example you can have a separate layer for the hair, shirt, paints, skin, and eyes of your image.

Step 2: Use the Selection Wand to select the areas of the outline that you want to color. After selecting the area switch to your layer named "Color" while the area is still selected.

Step 3: Use the Flood Fill to fill the selection with color of your choice. This is the first step of laying down the basic color. Right now your image should have a very basic colored look, but keep in mind that this is just the start. Detail will be added later with the burn tool.

Step 4: It's time to use the burn tool. Imagine that light is shining on your image. Keept this process simple. If the light is shining on the left then you will use the burn tool to shade the right. If it shines on the right then shade the left. The burn tool will change the color to a darker version of the fill color.

The higher the strength of the burn the darker the color will be. Use a lower strentgh to show slight color variations that give the appearance of skin tone. Various burn strengths can be used to create many color variations. Click Here to see a finished image that was colored with only this Burn Technique.
